UK's Largest Supermarket Bans Candy Sales Around Checkout

Rows of sweets on display near the cashier can foster unhealthy eating patterns , especially for children . Tesco , the largest supermarket in the UK banned the sale of candy and chocolate on the shelf near the cash register .


Tesco survey found that 65 % of buyers want candy removed from shelves around the cashier to help shoppers make healthier choices when shopping . Even 67 % of buyers say it can help them make healthy choices for their children .



Tesco could eliminate sweets and chocolate from a shelf near the checkout at Tesco's 740 branches in 1994 . Yet now they will remove it from all Tesco stores , including 1,800 Tesco Metro and Express in the UK and Ireland . This retailer is committed to remove it altogether at the end of December 2014 . , But they promote the implementation after conducting customer surveys .



Philip Clarke , Tesco chief executive , said the decision to continue their commitment to provide soft drinks , sandwiches , fast food and healthier by changing the recipe to reduce sugar , salt , and fat .



" We know how easily tempted with sugary snacks near the cash register , and we want to help customers live a healthier life , " said Phillip Clarke quoted in The Guardian ( 22/5/2014 ) .



UK Public Health Minister , Jane Ellison , Tesco welcomed the decision , saying it can help prevent obesity in children .



" This initiative will help people to make healthier choices . They can contribute to reducing long- term costs of our nation in obesity and health problems , " said Jane Ellison as reported by the BBC
